Testimonials

Stomach cancer

Stomach cancer is a disease that can occur in any part of the stomach. The most common types of stomach cancers start in the inner lining of the stomach (mucosa) or in the main muscle layer (muscularis).
It is much more common in men than women and becomes less common with age. The most common symptom of stomach cancer is indigestion that doesn’t go away after 2 weeks. Other symptoms include heartburn, upper abdominal pain, loss of appetite, weight loss and vomiting. When left untreated for a long time, stomach cancer can spread to other organs such as the liver, lungs and kidneys.

Diagnosis of stomach cancer

Stomach cancer can be diagnosed through a combination of different tests, including:
1. Physical exam: The doctor will examine the abdomen to look for any lumps, swelling or tenderness.
2. Imaging tests: Imaging tests such as a CT scan, MRI, ultrasound, or PET scan can help identify the location and extent of the cancer.
3. Endoscopy: A thin, flexible tube with a camera on the end is inserted through the mouth and down into the stomach to examine the lining of the stomach and take a tissue sample (biopsy) for further testing.
4. Biopsy: A tissue sample is removed during an endoscopy or surgery and examined under a microscope to determine if cancer cells are present.
5. Blood tests: Blood tests can detect certain substances produced by stomach cancer cells, such as tumor markers or elevated levels of certain enzymes.

Treatment of stomach cancer

Treatment options for stomach cancer depend on the type and stage of the cancer.
The main treatment strategy for stomach cancer is surgery, but surgery can only be used when gastric cancer is detected early enough, chemotherapy, radiation therapy to shrink tumors, and/or certain drugs that target specific genetic abnormalities unique to some forms of this disease.

Costs for the treatment of stomach cancer in Germany
