Testimonials

Rectal cancer

Rectal cancer is a form of cancer that begins in the anus or rectum. It develops from cells called adenocarcinomas that are found in the inner lining of the digestive tract. Rectal cancer begins when these cells change and no longer grow in a normal way.
The rectum is the lowest part of the colon, or large intestine, which runs from the end of your colon (small intestine) to your rectum and anus.

Diagnosis of rectal cancer

Rectal cancer is diagnosed during an endoscopy, where a flexible tube with a light and small video camera at the tip is shoved up the bottom of your colon. A biopsy (the removal of a small sample of tissue) can also be done during this procedure to confirm the diagnosis
The doctor may also order a CT scan or MRI to get more information about the bowel and surrounding organs.

Treatment of rectal cancer

There are many different treatment options for rectal cancer. Treatment depends on how advanced the cancer is and whether it has spread (metastasized). It’s also important to find out if the lining of the bowels is also affected. Early detection means that treatment can begin earlier and be more effective.
Surgery is often recommended for rectal cancer, but you may also need chemotherapy, radiation therapy or a combination of therapies to destroy tumor cells remaining after surgery.

Costs for the treatment of rectal cancer in Germany

It is important to know that there are different types of treatment options available and each has different costs associated with it.
In Germany the average cost for the rectal cancer treatment is about €27.000.
