Pancreatic cancer
Pancreatic cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the pancreas. The pancreas is a gland that lies behind the stomach and helps with digestion.
It begins with damage to the tissues that produce enzymes used in digestion and takes time for symptoms such as weight loss, back pain and indigestion to start showing up.
Diagnosis of pancreatic cancer
The doctor will perform a physical examination as well as an imaging test to evaluate the pancreas. If there is suspicion of pancreatic cancer, a biopsy is performed to obtain tissue samples for examination under a microscope. These tests are used to help determine if any cancer cells remain in the body after treatment and may also be used to assess whether the cancer has spread (metastasized).
Treatment of pancreatic cancer
The treatment of pancreatic cancer depends on the stage of the cancer and whether it has spread to other parts of the body. Treatment may include one or more of the following: Surgery The most common type of surgery for pancreatic cancer is known as a Whipple procedure. This surgery removes sections of your pancreas, gallbladder, part or all of your stomach, and first parts of your small intestine.
Other treatment options include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy and biologicals.
