Liver fibrosis

Liver fibrosis (also known as liver scarring) is the abnormal growth of connective tissue in the liver. Liver fibrosis may result from damage to the liver caused by alcohol abuse, chronic hepatitis C infection, cirrhosis of the liver, or some types of cancer. Liver fibrosis can also be caused by other conditions such as viral hepatitis, autoimmune hepatitis and chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).

Diagnosis of liver fibrosis

Liver fibrosis is diagnosed through a variety of means, including imaging scans, blood tests and biopsy.
An ultrasound or CT scan can help to detect liver inflammation in the early stages. Once you have a diagnosis of liver fibrosis, you will likely be referred to a specialist center for further testing and treatment recommendations.

Treatment of liver fibrosis

In order to treat liver fibrosis, your doctor may prescribe antivirals to remove the virus from your body. Your doctor may also recommend avoiding alcohol if you have alcoholic liver disease because this can worsen your symptoms.
If you have chronic viral hepatitis, anemia may occur as a result of your illness. To treat this condition, your doctor may recommend transfusions of red blood cells or iron supplements.
