Liver echinococcosis
Liver echinococcosis, also known as hepatic hydatid disease, is a parasitic infection caused by the larval stage of the Echinococcus granulosus tapeworm. The infection usually occurs in rural areas where there is close contact between dogs and livestock, as dogs are the primary host for the adult tapeworm.
Liver echinococcosis can cause a variety of symptoms, including abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and an enlarged liver. In some cases, the infection may be asymptomatic and only discovered incidentally through imaging studies.
Diagnosis of liver echinococcosis
Liver echinococcosis can be diagnosed through a combination of medical history, physical examination, and diagnostic tests. Here are some of the tests that may be used to diagnose liver echinococcosis:
1. Imaging studies: Imaging studies such as ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI can be used to detect the presence of cysts in the liver and to evaluate their size, location, and characteristics.
2. Blood tests: Blood tests can be used to detect antibodies to the Echinococcus granulosus tapeworm. However, these tests may not be reliable in all cases, particularly in cases of inactive or calcified cysts.
Treatment of liver echinococcosis
Treatment of liver echinococcosis usually involves surgical removal of the cyst, along with the use of antiparasitic medications to kill any remaining larvae. In some cases, a minimally invasive approach known as percutaneous drainage may be used to remove the cyst. Long-term follow-up is important to detect any recurrence of the infection.
Costs for the treatment of liver echinococcosis in Germany
The cost of treating liver echinococcosis in Germany can vary widely depending on the severity of the condition, the treatment plan, the hospital, and the healthcare provider. In general, the cost of treating liver echinococcosis can range from €18.000 to €20.000 or more.
Surgical treatment of liver echinococcosis, such as partial liver resection or percutaneous drainage of the cyst, can be expensive and can cost upwards of €25.000 to €30.000.
