Liver cancer
Liver cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the liver. The liver is a vital organ that is part of your body’s digestive system, housing thousands of working cells. These cells are responsible for filtering harmful substances from your blood, producing bile that helps digest fats and proteins, and releasing substances into your bloodstream to help metabolize proteins and carbohydrates.
Cancer that starts in the liver is called primary hepatic cancer. If cancer spreads to the liver from another part of the body, it’s called metastatic cancer. Liver cancer is often fatal if it’s not detected early.
Diagnosis of liver cancer
Diagnosing liver cancer can be difficult because the symptoms may be vague, only show up after the disease has progressed, or are easily confused with other conditions. When doctors suspect liver cancer, they usually first use imaging tests such as CT scans or ultrasound to find out if cancer cells have spread beyond the liver. Then they’ll use blood tests and biopsies to confirm their suspicions.
Treatment of liver cancer
The treatment of liver cancer depends on a number of factors, including whether your liver tumor is benign or malignant, your overall health and life expectancy. The goal of treatment is to cure the cancer and to help you live as long and comfortably as possible.
The most common treatment for liver cancer is surgery, but it can be hard to target the tumor because it typically grows in clusters rather than being contained in a single area. Treatment options include radiation therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiofrequency ablation and interventional therapy.
