Hiatal hernia (hiatus hernia)
Hiatal hernia (hiatus hernia) is a condition in which the upper portion of the stomach protrudes into the esophagus. The term hiatus means “a narrow space” or “a small opening,” and hernia means “to protrude.”
In most cases, this condition results from a congenital weakness in the diaphragm muscle that causes stomach contents to move from their place in the abdomen into the esophagus. When this occurs, pressure is exerted on nearby structures such as nerves and blood vessels. When this pressure becomes too great, it can damage those structures, causing abdominal pain and other symptoms.
