Esophageal Stenosis
Esophageal stenosis, also known as esophageal narrowing or stricture, is a condition in which the esophagus (the tube that carries food from the throat to the stomach) is narrowed due to scarring or other damage.
The esophagus can be narrowed by inflammation, infection, or scarring. The most common cause of esophageal stenosis is Barrett’s esophagus, which occurs when cells in the cells lining the esophagus begin eating away at each other and forming abnormal tissue.
Diagnosis of esophageal Stenosis
Esophageal stenosis is diagnosed by endoscopy. An endoscope is a thin, flexible tube with a camera on the end. The patient inserts the endoscope through their mouth into their esophagus. This allows a doctor to see any blockages in the esophagus and how it affects the flow of food and liquids through the body.
Treatment of esophageal Stenosis
The treatment for esophageal stenosis is a combination of medical and surgical approaches. The most common approach to treating esophageal stenosis involves the surgical removal of one side of the esophagus, or “withdrawing” the narrowed portion. This can be done through an open surgical procedure, or through a minimally invasive one that utilizes keyhole surgery.
