Crohns disease
Crohns disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that can affect any part of the digestive system, including the mouth, anus, esophagus and rectum. The cause of Crohn’s disease is not well understood, but it’s thought to be caused by an abnormal immune response to bacteria in the digestive tract.
Crohn’s disease usually starts with an attack of diarrhea or abdominal pain. After this initial flare-up, Crohn’s may develop over time. This can cause symptoms to become worse and worse, including diarrhea, rectal bleeding, nausea, bloating, and weight loss. In some cases, the intestines get stuck together (ileostomy) or there’s an abscess (pyogenic infection).
Diagnosis of crohns disease
Crohn’s disease is diagnosed through a process called colonoscopy. During this procedure, a scope is inserted into your colon to examine the lining of your digestive tract. An endoscope is then used to look at the inside of your small intestine.
The procedure can be done as an outpatient, meaning that you may go home after the procedure and resume normal activities.
