Chronic pancreatitis is a condition that causes chronic inflammation of the pancreas. The pancreas is a gland that secretes digestive enzymes and hormones which help break down food.
In people with chronic pancreatitis, the pancreas becomes inflamed and swollen due to the inflammatory response to damage. The inflammation can occur anywhere in the pancreas, but is most common in the head of the pancreas.
It can develop over many years, or it may happen suddenly following an attack of acute pancreatitis. It can cause severe pain in a person’s upper abdomen and back (the epigastrium), nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
If left untreated it can lead to organ failure and death after several years of suffering.
