Bile duct inflammation
Bile duct inflammation is one of the most common causes of gallstones. It occurs when bile leaks into the wall of a bile duct, causing pain, swelling and redness in the area. Bile duct inflammation can also cause intermittent abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting.
Diagnosis of bile duct inflammation
Bile duct inflammation is diagnosed by identifying the symptoms of bile duct disorders, including diarrhea, weight loss, and pain. The doctor may also order blood tests to detect bacteria or viruses that cause bile duct disease.
However, this does not always indicate significant bile duct damage, so other tests are also used to confirm this diagnosis.
One common test is a CT scan, which uses radiation to create images of internal structures. This can be helpful in determining whether there’s damage to the bile ducts that could lead to chronic inflammation.
Treatment of bile duct inflammation
The treatment of bile duct inflammation depends on the type and severity of the inflammation.
The most common cause of bile duct inflammation is gallstones. If you have gallstones, your doctor may recommend surgery to remove them.
Another cause of bile duct inflammation is cancer. This is particularly true if the cancer has spread to other parts of your body (metastatic cancer). In this case, your doctor may recommend chemotherapy or radiation therapy as a way to shrink tumors before removing them surgically.
Bile duct stones can also be caused by other conditions such as cholangitis or cholecystitis, which are infections of the bile ducts that can lead to bile duct damage.
