Trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis (TMC OA)
Trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis (TMC OA) is a type of arthritis that originates in the hands, wrists and fingers. It is often thought to be the result of repeated on-the-job injuries from using one’s hands. Trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis appears as painful degeneration in the bones at the end of your fingers, thumb joints and wrist.
Diagnosis of trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis (TMC OA)
Trapeziometacarpal OA is very common in the hand and is most often diagnosed on x-rays. A pateint can have symptoms of pain, tenderness, swelling and stiffness in the wrist, elbow or middle finger. A physical exam may show joint guarding, swelling and tenderness over one or more joints due to degenerative changes which may not be visible on x-rays.
Treatment of trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis (TMC OA)
Treatment of Trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis (TMC OA) can be difficult at first. The joint is small and non-weight bearing, but it is a very important joint in the hand. I prefer to avoid surgery unless absolutely necessary. However, if there is a severe deformity or disease that cannot be treated conservatively, then surgical arthroplasty may be indicated.
