Spina bifida
Spina bifida is a birth defect that occurs when the spinal column does not fully close in the womb. The defect involves the spinal cord, which carries signals from the brain to other parts of the body.
The most common type of spina bifida is an opening in the spine called an esodevelopment of the neural tube. The defect may occur at any point along this area, but it is most often seen in children between 10 and 12 weeks gestation.
Some people with spina bifida have no symptoms or only minor ones; however, others have severe symptoms including paralysis, blindness, urinary tract problems, bowel problems and bowel incontinence (bowel leakage).
Diagnosis of spina bifida
Spina bifida is diagnosed by observing how your child’s brain and spinal cord are connected in the womb. If you notice that a piece of skin has separated and grown abnormally into your child’s spine, or if there are any fluid build-ups on the back or sides of their abdomen, this can be an indicator that they have spina bifida.
