Prostate cancer
Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men (excluding skin cancers). It occurs more often in older men, but can occur at any age.
If you have prostate cancer, also called prostatic cancer and also known as prostate adenocarcinoma, your body has an abnormal growth of cells in the prostate gland. The prostate is located below the bladder and surrounding the urethra. This can lead to swelling in that part of the body, which can cause problems with urination.
Diagnosis of prostate cancer
Prostate cancer is diagnosed by a visual examination of the prostate gland and rectum, blood tests including a free-testosterone blood test, prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test, transrectal ultrasound (TRUS), needle biopsy and a bone scan.
Treatment of prostate cancer
The main treatments for prostate cancer are surgery, radiation therapy and hormone therapy. Treatment with each of these options depends on many factors like the stage of your disease and your overall health.
Costs for the treatment of prostate cancer in Germany
The cost of prostate cancer treatment in Germany can vary widely depending on the type of treatment, the stage and grade of the cancer, and the hospital or clinic where the treatment is received.
Surgery for prostate cancer, such as a radical prostatectomy, can cost about €23.000, depending on the extent of the surgery and the length of the hospital stay.
