Phimosis
Phimose is a disorder of the foreskin. The word comes from the Greek phimosis, meaning muzzling. Phimosis is when the foreskin cannot slide back to uncover the glans (tip of the penis). When phimosis occurs in children, it may be possible to treat by gently pulling on the foreskin every day. However, in some cultures where boys are not allowed to pull back their foreskins until they become teens or adults.
Diagnosis of phimosis
Phimosis is diagnosed by a physical exam. A doctor can gently pull back the foreskin to see if it will unroll and cover the glans without effort.
Treatment of phimosis
Treatment of phimosis can be surgical or nonsurgical. Surgical treatment involves removing the tight ring of tissue (phimosis) which restricts the opening of the foreskin. The most common treatment for phimosis is circumcision. The foreskin may be pulled back (retracted) manually to allow the doctor to visually inspect the penis and stimulate an erection if necessary.
