Optic nerve atrophy (ONA)
Optic nerve atrophy (ONA) is a disease of the optic nerve, which transmits visual information from the eyes to the brain. It is characterized by a decrease in the amount of nerve fibers and axons that are present in the optic nerve head, which leads to gradual deterioration of vision. Symptoms include decreased vision, changes in color perception, and decreased ability to see at night or in low light conditions.
In most cases, ONA develops slowly over time with no apparent cause. However, some cases may be linked to an underlying condition such as diabetes or glaucoma.
Diagnosis of optic nerve atrophy (ONA)
Optic nerve atrophy is diagnosed by a medical professional, who will look at the optic nerve and assess if it has shrunken or lost its ability to work. A visual examination may be performed to determine the extent of the damage.
Treatment of optic nerve atrophy (ONA)
Treatment of Optic nerve atrophy (ONA) is not possible because there is no cure for this disease.
However, if the optic atrophy occurs as a result of inflammation of the optic nerve, it can be treated symptomatically with antibiotics if necessary.
Costs for the treatment of optic nerve atrophy (ONA) in Germany
