Meniscus tear
Meniscus tear is a common condition that occurs when the soft tissue structures in the knee bend or twist too much. The meniscus is a “shock absorber” cushion between the femur (thigh bone) and tibia (shinbone). It helps to distribute weight load across cartilage, joints and bones. When a portion of the meniscus tears, it can cause pain, inflammation, stiffness and swelling of the knee joint.
It can also cause a grinding sensation when you walk. Meniscus tears usually happen in older people because the menisci lose some of their elasticity over time.
Diagnosis of meniscus tear
A meniscus tear is usually diagnosed through a physical examination. However, sometimes an MRI can be helpful in determining the extent of a meniscus tear. An MRI can determine if there are multiple tears or whether there is damage to the knee cartilage.
Treatment of meniscus tear
Treatment of Meniscus tear can vary depending on the severity of the tear and location. The treatment options include conservative, surgical, and minimally invasive treatments. Conservative treatment involves physical therapy, exercise and medication to try to avoid more serious surgery. Minimally invasive treatment might involve using sound waves to treat the tear without requiring a scalpel or stitches. Surgical treatments vary widely depending on whether a partial or complete meniscectomy is needed.
Costs for the treatment of meniscus tear in Germany
An estimated cost of an average Meniscus tear treatment in Germany can range from €9.500-€14.300.
