Medulloblastoma
Medulloblastoma is a type of cancer that begins in the cerebellum, the portion of the brain behind the ears. It’s usually found in children and young adults, though it can also occur at any age.
Medulloblastoma is named for its appearance: it resembles a little mound on top of the cerebellum. This tumor can grow rapidly to fill most of the cerebellum, and it may interfere with normal brain function.
Diagnosis of medulloblastoma
Medulloblastoma is a type of cancer that starts in the cerebellum. It’s usually diagnosed by CT scan or MRI, but it can also be diagnosed through biopsy or another imaging test.
The symptoms of medulloblastoma depend on where the tumor is located.
Symptoms of medulloblastoma can include:
-Seizures
-Balance issues
-Vision problems
Treatment of medulloblastoma
There are two main types of treatment for medulloblastoma: surgery and chemotherapy. Surgery removes the tumor and may also remove part of your jawbone (mandible) to give you better breathing ability if you had a tumor in your throat or neck. Chemotherapy kills any cells that have been affected by the cancer and stops new tumor growth.
If you have surgery to remove your medulloblastoma, radiation therapy will follow to help shrink scar tissue that forms after surgery. Radiation therapy can also be used to treat other cancers in this area such as glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), which is very rare and usually occurs when people have more than one brain tumor at once.
Costs for the treatment of medulloblastoma in Germany
Cost of Medulloblastoma treatment in germany depends on the type of treatment you choose and the hospital you are treated at.
The average cost of performing surgery in Germany is approximately €40.000.
