Lateral ligament injury
Lateral ligament injury is a term for describing an injury of one of the four ligaments on the outer knee. These four ligaments provide stability to the knee joint, and are all located on either side of the knee joint (called “lateral”). There are two lateral collateral ligaments(LCL)and two posterior lateral collaterals (PLCs). Lateral collateral ligament injuries can be mild or severe, depending on the degree of tear.
Diagnosis of lateral ligament injury
When the lateral ligament becomes damaged, it will not effectively hold the ankle in place. The resulting instability can cause pain and swelling. Other common symptoms are a lack of balance and difficulty turning or rotating the ankle. An x-ray, MRI and/or CT scan may be performed to determine if you have a torn lateral collateral ligament.
Treatment of lateral ligament injury
The treatment of lateral ligament injuries depends on the degree of injury, whether they are acute or chronic and how long they have existed. Rest and anti-inflammatory medicine are usually the first recommendation. Your doctor may also recommend physical therapy, which will include stretching exercises or surgery.
Costs for the treatment of lateral ligament injury in Germany
Costs of treatment of Lateral ligament injury depends on the severity of the injury. An estimated cost of an average lateral ligament injury treatment in Germany can range from €6.500-€14.300.
