Kidney stones with hydronephrosis
Hydronephrosis (also known as ‘water on the kidney’) is a condition in which the kidney is obstructed by excessive fluid. The obstruction may be complete or partial, resulting from a variety of causes such as inflammation and tumors. Obstruction of urine flow leads to renal failure, hypertension and pain.
The most common cause of hydronephrosis is a blockage in the ureter (the tube leading from the kidney to the bladder).
Diagnosis of kidney stones with hydronephrosis
To diagnose hydroureteronephrosis, your doctor will ask about your symptoms and medical history, perform a physical exam of your abdomen and pelvis, and order some tests. These may include imaging tests such as X-ray or CT scan (both involve exposing you to small amounts of radiation), an ultrasound exam to examine the kidneys and urinary tract, or an intravenous pyelogram (IVP).
