Femoral neck fracture
Femoral neck fracture is a break to the lower part of the thigh bone that occurs under normal conditions. The femoral neck, also known as Ward’s area, is located between the greater trochanter and the point at which it connects with the hip region.
Common causes for this type of injury include motor vehicle accidents, falls and pelvic injuries.
Diagnosis of femoral neck fracture
The femoral neck fracture is diagnosed through the use of X-rays, CT scans, and MRI. An X-ray will reveal a break in the bone structure, but it cannot tell if there is any damage to the surrounding tissue or other bones. A CT scan utilizes multiple images taken at different angles to show the interior areas of your body and allows doctors to see any fractures or cartilage damage. With results in just minutes, MRI can help detect any tears in muscles or ligaments as well as any other damage that may require treatment.
Treatment of femoral neck fracture
Femoral neck fractures are common injuries and can be challenging to treat. There are many treatment options for femoral neck fractures, including open reduction internal fixation (ORIF), percutaneous fixation (PF), and dynamic hip screw (DHS) as a temporary or definitive treatment. The goal of treatment is to obtain a stable fixation that restores normal anatomy, prevents further complications, and allows the patient to return to their previous level of function as soon as possible.
Costs for the treatment of femoral neck fracture in Germany
The average cost of Femoral neck fractures surgery is around €19.000.
