Erectile dysfunction (impotence)
Erectile dysfunction is a common problem that can affect men of all ages. It occurs when a man has trouble getting or keeping an erection. Erection problems are a common side effect of many drugs, including certain blood pressure medicines, antihistamines, antidepressants, and decongestants.
Diagnosis of erectile dysfunction (impotence)
The diagnosis of erectile dysfunction is based on the patient’s medical and sexual history, a physical exam, and laboratory testing. In many cases, ED has a clear cause. Chronic or severe medical conditions can lead to ED by damaging nerves or interfering with blood flow to the penis. These include high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, diabetes mellitus, heart disease and even certain cancers. A small number of medications can lead to ED. Medications that may cause ED include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including ibuprofen and naproxen sodium, antihistamines, sedatives or tranquilizers, hormone therapies, antidepressants or other psychiatric medicines; blood pressure medicines; epilepsy medications, sulfa drugs, iron supplements, some prostate medications, herbal supplements like ephedra and saw palmetto, some alternative remedies like maca root powder.
