Testimonials

Ependymoma

Ependymoma is a tumor of the brain and spinal cord. It’s also known as ependyma-sparing glioma, ependymoblastoma, and ependymoblastoma.
The tumor starts in the ependyma (a type of tissue that lines the ventricles of the central nervous system), then grows and spreads.
Ependymomas are often benign, but can also be malignant (cancerous).

Diagnosis of Ependymoma

Ependymoma is diagnosed by a combination of symptoms and imaging tests.
In short, that means that the first step in diagnosing ependymoma is to look at the patient’s symptoms and make a diagnosis based on their doctor’s experience. On top of that, imaging tests will be used to determine if the tumor has grown or spread.
The most definitive test is a biopsy, which involves removing tissue from an area of concern with a needle and syringe. The tissue will then be examined under a microscope for signs of cancer cells.

Treatment of Ependymoma

The treatment of ependymoma depends on the size of the tumor and the extent of involvement in other parts of the brain.
The goal of treatment is to remove as much of the tumor as possible. This may be done through surgery, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy. In some cases, surgery alone may be sufficient, however, if surgery does not remove all of the tumor, radiation therapy may be used to further reduce tumor size and reduce risk of recurrence. In cases where radiation therapy does not work well enough or does not completely eliminate remaining tumor cells, chemotherapy can be used to kill them off completely.
