Chondroma
Chondroma is a benign tumor of cartilage. Typically, chondromas develop in the outermost layer of cartilage called subchondral bone. This is a highly vascular area and usually responds well to treatment. The majority of chondromas are confined to one joint. In other cases, multiple joints may be affected or the tumor can spread throughout the skeleton resulting in osteosarcoma.
Diagnosis of chondroma
Chondroma is usually diagnosed by a physician based on the patient’s medical history and a physical exam. An MRI or CT scan may be used to rule out other problems that can cause pain and swelling, such as arthritis or gout.
Treatment of chondroma
Treatment of chondroma depends on the size and location of the tumor. Small tumors can be surgically removed through an arthroscopic procedure with or without bone removal. If necessary, a volume reduction can be performed to reduce the pressure on surrounding joints and bones. For larger tumors, arthrodesis may be necessary which involves the surgical removal of the joint cartilage around the knee and filling in any gaps with bone grafts so that movement is not possible.
