Chiari Malformation
Chiari Malformation, also known as Arnold-Chiari malformation, is a structural abnormality in which the cerebellar tonsils (part of the brain) extend below the foramen magnum, which is the opening at the base of the skull through which the spinal cord passes. In a person with Chiari malformation, the cerebellar tonsils protrude into the upper spinal canal, potentially leading to a range of neurological and related symptoms.
There are several types of Chiari malformation, but the most common is Type I.
Diagnosis of Chiari Malformation
Diagnosis typically involves imaging studies, such as MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), to visualize the brain, spinal cord, and the extent of the malformation.
Treatment of Chiari Malformation
Surgery is often considered for individuals with significant symptoms or progressive neurological deficits. There are several surgical procedures for Chiari malformation:
Posterior Fossa Decompression: This is the most common surgical procedure for Chiari Type I. It involves removing a small portion of the skull (suboccipital craniectomy) to create more space and relieve pressure on the brain and spinal cord. This procedure can be performed with or without a dural graft to expand the space further.
Duraplasty: In some cases, a dural graft (a piece of tissue used to repair the dura, the protective membrane around the brain and spinal cord) is added during posterior fossa decompression to enlarge the space further.
