Cataract
Cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye. The lens is a clear, curved structure that helps focus light onto the retina. A cataract occurs when the lens becomes cloudy or cloudy-like, often because of a tear in it. Cloudiness can affect your vision and cause you to have trouble seeing clearly.
If you experience symptoms such as blurry vision, difficulty reading or seeing objects at a distance, halos around lights and flashing lights, halos around people’s faces, flashing lights when you blink, or double vision (seeing two images at once), it’s possible that you have a cataract.
A cataract will usually not cause problems if it’s caught early enough and treated properly by an eye doctor or surgeon. If not treated quickly enough or unsuccessfully treated by surgery, however, complications like blindness can occur.
Diagnosis of cataract
Cataract is diagnosed by an eye doctor, who will first ask questions about your symptoms and medical history. The doctor will then perform an eye exam and perhaps ask you to do some simple tests, like focusing on a lighted object or moving your eyes around.
Treatment of cataract
There are two main types of treatment: laser surgery and intraocular lens replacement surgery (IOLs). Both procedures involve removing a small piece of crystalized tissue from inside each eye so that it can be replaced with one or more artificial lenses that are placed inside the eye socket (cornea) behind an artificial membrane called an IOL-DME).
Costs for the treatment of cataract in Germany
The cost of a cataract surgery in Germany varies depending on the type of procedure that you need, but will typically range from around €5.000 to €6.400.
