Bladder neck obstruction
Bladder neck obstruction is a condition that occurs when your bladder neck, which lies between your bladder and urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the body), can’t relax enough to allow urine to flow from your body.
Bladder neck obstruction occurs when something blocks this flow. This can cause pain or discomfort.
Diagnosis of bladder neck obstruction
Bladder neck obstruction is diagnosed by the presence of blood in the urine and on urine culture. Bladder neck obstruction can be caused by prostatic hypertrophy, long-term indwelling catheterization, tumors, or cancer cells invading the bladder. To confirm the diagnosis, a cystoscopy (examination of the lower urinary tract with a lighted tube) is performed. In cystoscopy, your doctor will remove a sample of cells from your bladder using a special instrument while viewing the sample through the cystoscope.
Treatment of bladder neck obstruction
The selection of treatment depends on several factors, including the seriousness of symptoms, the degree to which a patient can urinate despite an obstruction, and the underlying cause of the obstruction.
The most common treatment for BOO is surgery. However, for patients with severe symptoms or those who have failed conservative management.
