Testimonials

Arteriovenous malformation AVM

Arteriovenous malformation AVM is a condition that affects the blood vessels that deliver blood to the brain. It causes blockages in the arteries, veins and capillaries of the brainstem. When blood can no longer flow freely through these vessels, it builds up pressure inside the brain, causing damage to nearby structures.
Some patients do not experience any symptoms until they have a stroke or bleed into their brains.

Diagnosis of arteriovenous malformation AVM

The diagnosis of Arteriovenous malformation AVM is made by imaging. The most common imaging techniques are computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRV).

In CT angiography, a contrast medium called iodinated contrast is injected into the arteries and veins in the brain, causing dye to flow through the blood vessels. The resulting images show blood flow patterns in the brain.

Treatment of arteriovenous malformation AVM

The treatment of an Arteriovenous malformation (AVM) depends on the size of the AVM and its location. If an AVM is large, surgery may be necessary to remove it. If an AVM is located in a vein near the heart (the superior sagittal sinus), then radiation therapy may be recommended to reduce the risk of recurrence or bleeding.

Other treatments include angioplasty and stenting, which are performed under local anesthesia; laser therapy; and embolization techniques such as percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTCA).

Costs for the treatment of arteriovenous malformation AVM in Germany

The cost of surgical treatment varies depending on the location and type of treatment performed. The average cost for a surgery performed in Germany is approximately €30.000.
