Achilles tendinitis (achilles tendinopathy)
Achilles tendonitis, also known as Achilles tendinopathy, is inflammation of the calf muscle tendon. This condition is most common in runners, basketball and soccer players, cyclists, and dancers. Achilles tendonitis is often caused by overuse or repetitive stress on the Achilles tendon. It generally occurs at the insertion of the gastrocnemius muscle (calf) into the heel bone (calcaneus) although it can also affect other parts of upper leg muscles.
Diagnosis of achilles tendinitis (achilles tendinopathy)
The diagnosis of Achilles tendinitis is made by a doctor based on clinical history, physical examination and imaging tests such as ultrasound or MRI. Acute (acute) Achilles tendinitis can be caused by overuse, particularly with running, jumping or pivoting activities. This is called eccentric loading and causes micro-tears in the tendon.If a person has previously had Achilles tendinosis, it could flare up again or even develop into Achilles tendinopathy that needs treatment.

The Achilles tendinopathy has many symptoms and is treated with anti-inflammatories, rest, orthotic (shoes), physical therapy and exercise.
The tendon may need surgical treatment if it does not improve with these initial treatments.
